SALEM, June 15—Shoving over a run in their half of the 15th inning, Salem Senators nosed out the Victoria Athletics, 8-7, in a thrilling, long, drawn-out, Western International baseball league fixture here Saturday night. The win kept the Senators in the league lead just ahead of the Wenatchee Chiefs, who also won.
John Carpenter, starting Victoria pitcher, was greeted with a five-run outburst in the first inning but settled down and pitched scoreless ball until the ninth inning. In the meantime, the Athletics kept swinging, scoring once in the second, three times in the third, tying the count in the fifth and going ahead with another singleton in the seventh.
Bob Jensen relieved Carpenter in the ninth when the Senators knotted the score and pitched a great game until the final frame when the losers brought in Bass and Blankenship in a futile effort to prevent the winning run. Both clubs scored once in the 11th frame of the tense game.
The series will wind up with a twin hill here tomorrow with the Canadian club returning to Victoria for a series with the Vancouver Capilanos starting Monday.

WIL STATS
Latest W.I.B.L. averages furnished by the Howe News Bureau, league statisticians, convincingly reveal the reason for the present plight of the cellar-dwelling Victoria Athletic, who are training most other clubs in all departments of offensive and defensive play.
In the 49 games played by the Victorians at the time the averages were made up, opposing clubs have scored a total of 454 runs, an average of over nine per game, throwing the blame squarely on the undermanned an inadequate hurling staff.
Defensively, the Athletics have been doing all right by themselves. They rate third in team fielding at .952, following Vancouver’s .954 and Spokane’s .953. In the vitally important art of making double plays, the local club rates third.
At the plate, the tail-enders are also trailing in many departments. They have scored 219 runs, seventh lowest, and hold the same spot in hits and total bases, general the measure of a team’s offensive policy.
Wenatchee’s slugging Chiefs lead in home runs, hits, runs scored and total bases, while Spokane and Tacoma pitching staffs have proved to be the most effective.
Woody Salmon, Salem catcher, is still the batting leader with a mark of .423, followed closely by Danny Amaral, Bremerton, at .405. Ed Murphy and Al Steele are the highest-ranking Victoria hitters at .293, followed by Pete Hughes, .288.
Milt Cadinha, Spokane, and Carl Gunnarson, Salem, were tied with seven wins and no losses to head hurlers. Cy Greenlaw, Tacoma, had ten wins and one loss, while Joe Vivalda, Wenatchee, had a 7-2 mark. Bob Jensen, Victoria fireballer, led in strikeouts with 76.
