Amaral Leads WI Batters
Bremerton's Dan Amaral moved into the Western International league batting leadership this week with a mark of .401, overtaking Woody Salmon, who returned to the Salem lineup after long injury-enforced idleness.
Salmon slipped to second with .396, Dick Kemper of Tacoma is in third with .389 and Glen Stetter of Wenatchee fourth at .383 in Howe News Bureau statistics. The figures cover play through Thursday, except for the Vancouver-Victoria game of June 25.
Fifth place at .353 goes to Fred Martinez, one of 9 Spokane players who died as result of Monday's bus crash. George Risk, who made the most hits with 80, and Bob Patterson, tied with Ed Murphy of Victoria for the lead in stolen bases at 15 each, were two other Spokane fatalities.
Bill Barisoff of Bremerton leads in home runs with 16, and is tied in total bases with Wenatchee's Dick Adams. Both have amassed 134. Adams also gets the pace in runs batted in with 66. Stetter has scored the most runs, with 60.
Salem's Carl Gunnarson suffered his first defeat last week, but his 9-1 won and lost record still heads the pitchers.
