WENATCHEE [News-Herald, June 17]—Vancouver Capilanos’ cup of woe overflowed with a vengeance on the weekend. As if losing another pair of baseball games to the Wenatchee Chiefs wasn’t enough, the Brownies learned that Catcher Bill Brenner, injured in Friday night’s game, was the owner of a broken ankle. With Ray Spurgeon still nursing the twisted ankle he acquired in the first game of the series, handyman Jim Estrada was forced to take over behind the plate.
After dropping Saturday’s tilt, 9-6, the makeshift Caps stretched their losing string to five straight by losing a heart-breaking 2-1 game in the first game of Sunday night’s doubleheader […]
Southpaw Jim Hedgecock, living up to his billing as the hard-luck member of the pitching staff, was the unfortunate victim of Sunday’s first contest. He allowed just three hits in the seven-inning game, but one of them was a double by Mel Wasley with two on (a walk and an error) in the third, good for both Wenatchee runs. The best Jim’s mates could do for him was a homer by Watts Gulan with none on. […]
LONG STAND DUE
But already Manager Syl Johnson and his crew are doing their best to forget the doings of Wenatchee, and are looking forward to better things in the next two weeks.
Starting tonight, the Brownies begin a 14-game stand with the lowly Victoria Athletics, and if the A’s play according to tradition, the locals will still be in the league.
They play tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday in Victoria, then return to Vancouver for seven games starting Thursday. Then it’s back to Victoria for the rest of the week to wind up the series. Got it? The next game here is Thursday.
Victoria’s team, doormats of the league all season, have strengthened considerably of late, but their pitching staff is still shaky.
[WILfan note: Wenatchee swept the twin-bill with a 10-4 win in the night game. Mel Wasley and Jim Warner each brought in a pair for the Chiefs, while Schmidt doubled, tripled and brought in a run, while scoring two others. Reggie Clarkson hit a solo homer for Vancouver and doubled ... Orteig allowed eight hits, but walked eight and struck out eight. Orphan surrendered four singles in addition to Clarkson's extra base hits, walked five and stuck out eight]
